Dolly Ki Doli Movie Review
Ratings:3/5 Reviewer: Srijana Mitra Das Site:Times Of India (TOI)
Debutant director Abhishek Dogra's con-bride story is simple and refreshing. It's filled with some laughable moments, hilarious performances and quirky characters. There aren't too many highs or dramatic turns; Dolly's past story is unconvincing and her track with Pulkit is the weak link in the plot. The climax is a sweet surprise, so hold on for it. After wedlocks across the country, there's only one faint picture of Dolly's shaadi? Really? What's 'app', guys?

On the whole, DOLLY KI DOLI is a stress buster that will make you smile as you'll leave the theatre. Debutante director Abhishek Dogra has competently extracted superb performances from the entire starcast. The unpredictable climax of the film works to the advantage too. But the four day weekend will help this Dolly ensnare many patrons. The word of mouth will be the key in witnessing the growth. We say, it's a roller coaster entertainer. Enjoy it with your families.

Dolly Ki Doli is a simple-n-sweet entertainer that promises fun and laughter in those 1.40 hours. Tight screenplay. Competent direction. Dolly Ki Doli also works because of wonderful performances by Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat and Varun Sharma.

Among the many delights of the film is this deadpan daadi maa, who repeats this one line like an alarm on snooze: Beti de di, sab kuch de diya, at the most crucial moments. There’s also a royal twist to the tale (quite literally) that eventually steers the film towards an unexpected climax. This is one of those rare Hindi films that actually ups the ante in the last few minutes and that’s a pleasant surprise indeed. A pacy screenplay keeps the narrative engaging and some tight editing manages to keep the film within 100 minutes, again a welcome treat. The writing is crisp and the director keeps a firm hold on all his characters, never letting them fly off the rails.

Sadly, in this ‘pure woman’ obsessed industry, even a conwoman is presented in the ‘touch me not’ garb. By the writer’s and director’s logic, Dolly can break hearts, break trust of the men who fell in love with her and chose to marry her, but please ignore all that because she is a good woman. It’s just that she has had a failed relationship in the past and please adore her because she doesn’t allow anyone to touch or kiss her! If a heartbreak in the past (every woman goes through that in one form or the other) justifies the protagonist turning a criminal, okay then.

Sonam-like-you-know-what-I-mean- Kapoor plays the titular role. She continues to showcase her awesome talent of flashing that radiant smile, those gorgeous clothes and dialogues that are screamed but never felt. I will take this moment to remind her of one of her quotes: “Loud acting is considered like…bol diya yaar, maine kar diya yaar…this is not acting, hello.” Yeah Sonam, copy THAT! If you know what I mean!
Dolly Ki Doli could have been spunkier, funkier and all things better. Watch it only for Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh.
