HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY comes across as an exception because the smartly-packaged fare never loses focus from its core issue [the fight between an army man and terrorists], with the post-interval portions diversifying into race-against-time thriller mode. Also, Murugadoss employs the right tricks to woo the entertainment-seeking spectator -- abundant turns in the screenplay, the face off between good and evil, the hand-to-hand combat, the subtle humor, the nail-biting finale et al -- but at the end of the day, the message that the film communicates resonates loud and clear. On the whole, HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY is a slick action-thriller that keeps you engrossed, enthralled and captivated all through, thanks to its fascinating premise and a watertight, razor-sharp screenplay. Go for it!

Murgadoss' film (remake of the Tamil 'Thupakki') offers an intelligent plot, with blows, blasts and raw bone-cracking action (Greg Powell- of 'Skyfall' fame). It triggers a fear that anyone from your paanwala to pizza-delivery boy could be a 'closet' terrorist (Beware!). While the core plot is compelling and finely directed, the side-tracks - like bombs needing to be deactivated and the romantic angle, waste screen-time and the songs infiltrate the plot too often. The film is too long and needs a taut edit. It has flaws too, but doesn't fail to entertain.

Holiday is a ride gone horribly wrong. It is a drab and dreary action thriller in which neither the action nor the thrills rise to any great heights. In the end, Holiday resembles the hero’s aforementioned broken arm, a crooked and cracked limb in desperate need of a bone replacement surgery. Holiday lacks the sustained intensity and urgency of an edge-of-the-seat spy thriller. The script does not allow Akshay Kumar to be the no-nonsense action hero that would have held the film in better stead.

At close to three hours, the film is way too long. Despite a persuasive story, you wish at times that editing was tighter. Song placement is not that wise and tries your patience. Sonakshi has nothing to do much in the film and overacts in places. For an actor who has already proved her mettle in the acting department, this definitely is a downer. One thought that with her Laila Ali boxing moves, she will also get to throw some punches! Other than Akshay, no one gets a well defined role in the film. Raghavan, who probably got more screen time than Sonakshi, end up looking caricaturish. However, despite these minor cribs, Holiday makes for a satisfying watch and will keep the audience coming. A summer hit is on its way!

The hardest bit about average films are that you are always in two minds whether to recommend them or to suggest you let it pass. However, for a change, I am suffering from no dubiousness this time. Don’t miss Holiday for the sheer fun of watching a film that wins solely for its delicious brutish action. The narrative isn’t exactly a work of genius with the logical apertures frequently getting the better of you. But Murugadoss doesn’t let go off the breakneck speed that Holiday benefits from. The film without the briskness would have failed to rise above the half decent mark. Don’t miss this one for the reckless headlong roller coster ride it holds for you.

Akshay's character's basic argument that terrorism can only be countered when the counter-terrorists are as fearless about losing their lives as the terrorists, is put forward with such gusto and conviction, we really can't argue with the plot premise. So here's your chance to go with the ferocious flow and not regret it for even a minute. Yes, the songs are like sleeping dogs that come awake at inopportune times to yelp out their melody-less messages. But the last farewell song, an ode to the dedication and sacrifices of Indian soldiers, will leave you moist eyed. This is Akshay's most engaging entertainer in recent times.

The whole film is relying completely on Akshay's shoulder. Sonakshi Sinha is doing what she does best singing and dancing. We wonder why the actor who did Lootera does films like this where she nothing much to do. Freddy Daruwala has debuted as main villain but he has flat expressions throughout the film. Sumeet Raghavan has done a decent job as Akshay's friend. A Soldier Is Never Off Duty only if you are a hardcore masala film fan and can sit through three hours.

Rating:4/5 Review By: MensXP Team Site:MensXP‘Holiday’ is one film that will be liked by both the masses and the classes equally. It’s sheer brilliance. It’s pacy, it’s fierce and it leaves you clutching to the edge of your seat plenty of times. The climax is a spectacle to watch. Don’t miss this. You don’t want to catch it on television later and regret not having watched it on the big screen.

Akshay steals the show with his dare devil stunts and action scenes. He looks every bit an Army man and thankfully does justice to the role. Known for his deadly stunts and mighty kicks, there’s no beating Akki when it comes to action. Apart from Akshay, Sumeet Raghavan is surprisingly a treat to watch. Perfect comic timing topped with witty one liners, Raghavan has managed to create an impact with his character. Along with this, the sudden twist in the story is interesting. Where this film starts out with the cliched “girl hates boy and vice-versa” nonsense, it grows intense with a scene showcasing the first bomb blast followed by Akshay Kumar’s chasing sequence. The action stunts although hideously defying the entire law of science on the whole, still manage to create that “wow” effect. The best part about the whole movie is a Labrador, yes a dog. We won’t give it all away…

Bollywood’s original action hero lives up to his title and Kumar excels in those hand-to-hand combats. While the climax of Holiday is like Christmas for an Akshay Kumar fan with its over-stretched fight sequences, a non-fan might not relish the sound of bones cracking as much. Watch this if you are in the mood for a Bollywood film that has a bit of everything — terrorism, action and romance.

Akshay Kumar in an action packed avatar is invincible. Looking extremely fit the B-town action hero is in complete command 'kicking' the right notes extremely enjoyable giving his audience their money worth. A paisa vasool performance.. The climax and pre climax portions will demand repeat viewing from his fans.. A.R. Murugudoss scores full marks whenever the film goes into it required combat mode.. Stunts by Greg Powell and Arasu are fabulous. Technically sound with Amitabh Shukla's crisp editing and Nataraja Subramanian sleek cinematography. Sumeet Raghavan as Akshay's friend chips in with good support. Holiday - A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is somewhat muddled by its of putting romantic track but the Akshay Kumar in his most wanted action packed avatar is kickass. A mast must watch for Akshay and action buffs..
